NBA All-Hair Team: 1970’s & 80’s Edition

by

Take another look at that picture. Mike Cage has that swag due to  1) he is 6’9″ & ripped and  2) his gorgeous hair.

The 70’s and 80’s were known for outrageous hairstyles. The NBA had their fair share:

1st Team

Michael Cage   – any list of great NBA hairdos has to start right here. The quintessential jheri curl. Extra credit to Cage for the fact that he pulls this off while also being an enforcer. Dudes in the club may want to clown him…but would never do it to his face.

Kenny “Sky” Walker – if you’re going to get a high-top fade, you may want to bring this picture with you to the barber shop. Walker underachieved in the league after a great career at UK, but that cut is immaculate. You Tube his 1989 slam dunk contest win – Dominique-esque.

Dr. J – there were plenty of vintage 1970’s Afros to choose from, but Doc rocked it the best. I’m cheating a bit because this is an ABA photo, but damn that’s a sublime ‘fro.

Detlef Shrempf – the German import had a nice game on the court and a tight haircut to boot. That’s a flat top fade groomed to impeccable standards. Ivan Drago called it luxurious.

Artis Gilmore – he garners the first team nod on girth alone. That Afro has to be 12 inches long from scalp to tip…splendiferous.

2nd Team

A.C. Green – if it wasnt for Cage, Green would have had the best jheri curl. To his credit (discredit?), he led a life of abstinence in the NBA.

Chris Mullin – LEGENDARY flat top.

Jack Sikma – white dudes don’t get away with perms. Somehow, Sikma pulled it off. Pristine.

Jerry West – take a close look: perfect part, great sideburns, and not a hair out of place. No wonder he is The Logo.

Dwayne Schintzius – I’m bending the rules again, because he didn’t play in the league until 1990. But you can’t blame me – that is the gold standard of mullets. Simply exquisite.

Coach – Pat Riley. King of the slick backed gangsta look. He will be 98 y/o before that hairline budges a millimeter.
