Bolton Wanderers Football Club were relegated from the English Premier League two and a half years after Owen Coyle took over as manager. It took a while, but it finally happened.
Coyle helped Burnley gain promotion to The Prem from the Coca Cola Football League Championship in 2009, and had the team looking impressive in their first Premier League season.
He guided The Clarets to 13th place with a record of 5 wins, 5 draws, and 10 losses; a very respectable record for a newly promoted side. Even more impressive was the home record of 5 wins, 4 draws, and 1 loss; making a fortress of the home pitch of Turf Moor.
Bolton, who were facing relegation in 18th place, then fired manager Gary Megson and approached Coyle to fill their vacancy. He took the job because The Trotters were a richer club and allowed him greater spending power in the transfer market. The season ended with Bolton in 14th and Burnley relegated in 18th.
Coyle had a good thing going for him in Burnley, and instead of staying loyal he abandoned the team to chase glory and has finally gotten what he deserves. There is no telling what could have happened at Turf Moor had Coyle stayed. He had a good thing going for him, the lads played hard for him, and all of England took notice. Everybody talked about how good a manager he was.
His legacy wasn’t broken but he tried to fix it anyway.
He got exactly what he deserved.
